Now that you understand how proficiencies work, you’re ready to create your character. Most of this is outlined on other pages of the website so I won’t go into detail here but we’ll run down the basics. You’ll need to choose a race. Races have unique advantages and disadvantages to base statistics and some may better fit a certain playstyle than others, but nothing says you can’t be a Drakhi with four different magic proficiencies to become the greatest Lizard-Wizard Murdon has ever seen.
Once your race is chosen, you’ll be given a certain number of proficiencies you’re allowed to choose and a number of extra points you can put into the proficiencies you choose(the number can be zero for this one). Here you’ll really want to pick proficiencies that match your playstyle. You can’t be a wizard if you never choose any magic. To really customize your character you may even come up with a custom proficiency that does what you specify so long as your CM approves it. Many games only allow one costom proficiency per character but this can vary so ask your CM.
Your CM will ask you about your playstyle and what your character’s specialty is. They will take the answer to this question and turn it into your class which will provide you with a cool passive ability. For example: Archenteron is a Human Windbreaker which means he has advantage on air spells that are used for destruction. This advantage can stack onto the advantage he gets for having a level three proficiency so the GM rolls 3 times and takes the highest of those rolls. Pretty useful for summoning those hurricanes.
